Secret machines are looking down on us everyday. If someone came up to you on the street and said this, you would probably turn and run. That’s because most of us are completely oblivious to the amount of money the country spends on secrecy infrastructure…..for obvious reasons—it’s well hidden. Well, hidden until now actually. Trevor Paglen has been working on a project over the past few years that involves photographing secret sites and satellites. Obviously there is a huge thrill in shooting objects and places where civilians are not allowed. But Paglen has a bigger issue he wants us to realize—that our country spends way too much time being secretive. As stated in the following video, he thinks about secrecy as a
“specific set of state powers and institutions within the government that have a logic that’s very very different then the surrounding government. In the US, that secrecy infrastructure is vast. The so called ‘black budget,’ which funds much of it, is about 50 or 60 billion dollars a year. When you have that kind of spending, you really are creating a mini-state.”
The video below, taken from The Creators Project, shows Paglen talking about his work.
